Why am I unable to run yum in CentOS?

The most common reason is a memory issue caused by a plugin installed by default. In order to resolve this, you will need to disable the "fastestmirrors" plugin. Open /etc/yum/pluginconf.d/fastestmirror.conf and set "enabled=0".
