Today we have made some big changes to what we recently referred to as our Backup VPSs. Here is an overview of what has changed and how it affects current clients:

Naming
Our Backup VPSs have been renamed to Storage VPSs and the plans no longer start with BU (for BackUp) but instead start with S (for Storage).

Intended purpose
They were renamed from Backup to Storage because the VPSs are no longer limited to strictly backups and can be used like normal VPSs (within the guidelines of our Acceptable Use Policy of course). We have removed the process restrictions so processes such as webserver, database servers, and VPNs will run without interruption. Basically they are just like our normal OpenVZ plans except with a lot more disk space and bandwidth (and with different RAM allocations). Future nodes will be built with a different RAID level to offer both redundancy and IO performance but currently our nodes still have RAID5 for data protection so any disk I/O intensive processes are still not allowed. We also do not offer any backup options for Storage VPSs (meaning you can't use the Wyvern Backup feature and we do not perform any backups on our end).

Port speeds
The 100Mbps download speed restriction has been lifted and now all Storage VPSs have access to a shared 1Gbps port (download and upload). We did have to make some bandwidth adjustments to some of the larger plans to accommodate this change.

RAM
All Storage VPSs come with a minimum of 256MB of RAM, this was changed because we've received tickets in the past requesting more than 128MB of RAM so that certain software could be installed. We feel that 256MB should be plenty for most software installs but additional RAM can be purchased if needed. Our largest plan will come with 512MB just to ensure it has adequate RAM for any software requiring that must space.

Resources and Pricing
We have made some changes to our large plans and made the pricing more affordable as you upgrade. Our 25GB, 50GB, and 100GB plans all remain the same (except for the RAM and Port upgrades). We no longer offer the 200GB, 300GB, or 400GB plans. We now offer 250GB, 500GB, 750GB, and 1000GB plans. Clients with a 200GB, 300GB, and 400GB are not impacted by this change and have the option to keep their current plan or upgrade/downgrade if they like. The only change to our 500GB plan (beside the RAM and Port upgrades of course) is that the bandwidth has been reduced to 2000GB instead of 4000GB. All plans with more than 100GB of disk space come with four times the bandwidth as apposed to the previous allocation of eight times to allow us to remove the 100Mbps download restriction.

Why?
All of these changes were made to better align our plans for future expansion of our new Storage VPS services depending on how well received these changes become. We plan to offer these service in multiple locations around the US to allow both geographic diversity and additional disaster recovery options for our clients, but at this time all current Storage VPS nodes are still located in our Denver, CO data center.

We hope that these changes allow our clients to better utilize these services and welcome any feedback you might have about these changes or the Storage VPSs in general so we can continue to improve them. Thank you.
