HAPPY AUGUST! We're happy to announce our new line of Xen PV (Paravirtualization) Virtual Private Servers!
Xen is much more like a normal server than OpenVZ is because it runs its own kernel and allows you more control over the OS making it a more ideal solution for advanced admins and companies who need more customization of their servers. Xen VPSs use their own logical storage volumes (LVMs) which means that when you order a VPS with 8GB of disk space, an 8GB partition-like block is created just for your VPS, so the storage your order is removed from the available hard drive immediately for your own personal use.
One key differences between our OpenVZ and Xen plans is that our OpenVZ plans have quite a bit more disk space, that is because of how Xen and OpenVZ handle disk space. Like previously mentioned, Xen grabs all of the disk space regardless of how much a VPS uses and thus we cannot balance our nodes like we do with OpenVZ to move higher disk usage clients to less populated nodes. Unfortunately because we have moved to enterprise-level hardware (Dell blades with Dell enterprise SAS drives) we are unable to throw a bunch of 2TB SATA drives into our servers so our cost per GB is much higher. In response to this we have doubled the bandwidth provided.
While some people will say 3GB for a $2/month VPS is not much, I would like to point out that out of all of our clients (including our Backup VPS clients) less than 10% of them are using more than 700MB of disk space so while 3GB is not a lot of disk space for say a file sharing website, it is plenty of space for the majority of uses that you might encounter.
